Server colocation costs involve separate arrangements for real estate and connectivity. Real estate is charged depending on location, while bandwidth rates are based on usage. it.canada maintains two "lights-out" facilities in downtown Toronto for server colocation, one at 151 Front St. West, and one at 263 Adelaide St. West. Here's a brief comparison of the two locations:
Co-location at 151 Front is provided primarily for rack-mount equipment. If you supply a server that cannot be rack-mounted (i.e. mini-tower), the space rental applied is the "host rate". Non-rack tower cases wider than 24cm will be charged twice the listed host rate (since cases wider than that can't be stacked two-to-a-shelf). The "host rate" is based on the vertical space used by your server in our rack. Tower-format cases are charged at slightly more than the standard rate for half their height, since they can sit side by side on shelves. But you'll still save money by using rack-mount equipment. The host rates at each location are likely to be found in the following table:
All non-rackmount cases require use of rack shelves, for which we charge $5/month at 151 Front, and are not charged at 263 Adelaide. 1 RU of space refers to one "rack unit", which is 1.75 vertical inches. We encourage customers to spend the extra money for good rackmount hardware, and we'd be happy to refer you to our favourite suppliers. We maintain a stock of rackmount cases and server hardware and can build a premium server for you if you like, but we'll charge a premium price. We're not really in the hardware business. We're happy to refer prospective customers to reputable vendors. Day-time scheduled access is available 9AM to 6PM weekdays, and must be requested 72 hours in advance. Emergency access is requested via phone call or pager and is billed with a minimum of 2 hours, billed in half hour increments. After hours (i.e. sleepy-time) requests are by pager. All visits are escorted. UPS power is provided using our enterprise UPS at each location, with a flat per-port rate for easier billing. This is usually purchased in conjunction with the remote reboot option, which is provided using Baytech RPC units and admin tools (CGI) running on our servers. The serial console option is provided via ssh or telnet, for additional security in case your machine can't be reached via the network. For x86 hardware, we also recommend you purchase a PC Weasel 2000 for use as your serial console, to make your server properly headless. Any time taken to make changes to the physical setup after the initial installation will be charged at access rates. IP addresses are assigned as necessary, though we reserve the right to recoup ARIN costs for assigned or allocated networks, and will assign new IP addresses as per ARIN's requirements. In particular, this means you should use named virtual hosts for serving web pages. This should only be a problem for people who serve SSL-encrypted pages, which require valid reverse DNS for authentication. If you require SSL hosting, we can assign you an IP address for your web site. Bandwidth is provided either as a burstable connection or at a fixed rate (throttled) with guaranteed availability of the bandwidth you're purchasing. We recommend burstable both for price and simplicity. If your equipment requires more bandwidth, it uses more bandwidth, without your having to pay close attention to it. Burstable bandwidth is calculated with 64Kbps granularity (up to 1.54Mbps) based on the 95th percentile value of traffic samples taken every 5 minutes on your interface on our Ethernet switch. This means you aren't charged for accidental or periodic peaks. Monthly bandwidth billing runs according to the following schedule:
Fixed-rate (throttled) bandwidth is also available by the month, according to the following schedule:
